CADDO LAKE CHRONICLE

 UPCOMING RAB MEETING
The next Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) meeting for Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant (LHAAP) will be held, tomorrow, Wednesday, January 19, 2021. This meeting is unique, in that it is the first in-person meeting in some time, and, more importantly, George Rice, a contamination expert whose role is to be an independent expert who shares information with the public, will be presenting on Metals in Groundwater at Longhorn.  The rest of the meeting will be updates from contractors performing the clean-up.

WORLD WETLANDS DAY ~ February 2

For 29 years, Caddo Lake has been the only Wetland of International Importance in Texas. World Wetlands Day is celebrated every February 2nd, and this year the theme is: Wetlands Action for People and Nature, highlighting the importance of actions to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands for humans and planetary health.

Each year on World Wetlands Day we focus on the value of wetlands to people and wildlife and shared information about the state of the lake. We hope you join us Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at the Caddo Lake State Park Rec. Hall located at 245 Park Road 2 in Karnack, TX from 3:30pm-6pm to hear from several partners who work to provide opportunities for people and habitat for wildlife at Caddo.

Introducing the new Superintendent of Caddo Lake State Park:

BRENDA COOPER

Brenda Cooper will be the new Superintendent for Caddo Lake State Park! (Here she is pictured with her children and grandson). Brenda grew up in South Texas and graduated from Arizona State University with a minor in Natural Resource Management and interned with the Arizona Game and Fish Department.  She later worked with the Tonto National Forest doing Spotted Owl research and moved back to Texas in 1999 where she worked with Sea Turtles at Padre Island National Seashore.  In 1999 she started her career with TPWD as a fisheries technician on Galveston Bay.  A few years later she accepted a job as the first TPWD Aquatic Education Specialist in the greater Houston area where she spent 5 years sharing her love of fishing with families teaching the TPWD Angler Ed program while building a strong volunteer base. In 2007, she became the Assistant Superintendent at Goliad State Park and Historic Site and in 2009 was promoted to the Park Superintendent position. At Goliad, Brenda led the team in caring for the complex's CCC National Register District; Zaragoza Birthplace State Historic Site; and Mission Rosario State Historic Site.  The complex/site has garnered numerous accolades under her management and stewardship.  Highlights include the addition of 88 acres of pristine habitat along the San Antonio River, updates to exhibits inside the museum of Mission Espiritu Santo and General Zaragoza's Birthplace, and opening of the new El Camino Real Visitor Center.  Brenda loves working for state parks and has been with the agency for 22 years.

A special thanks to Nicolette Ledbury and the entire Caddo Lake team for keeping the Caddo "oars in the water and the canoe between the cypress trees" the past few months.
