Founded in 1993, the Caddo Lake Institute is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to protecting one of America’s most significant wetlands — Caddo Lake.
Caddo Lake is an internationally recognized Ramsar Wetland of Importance spanning the Texas-Louisiana border. Our work focuses on restoring healthy water flows, improving water quality throughout the watershed, reintroducing native species like the paddlefish, controlling invasive species, and conserving lands critical to the lake’s long-term ecological health.
We work in close partnership with local communities, scientists, and government agencies — including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries — along with leading foundations, to monitor conditions, safeguard natural resources, and ensure that Caddo Lake’s ecological integrity and natural beauty endure for generations to come.

THE PADDLEFISH PROJECT
Caddo Lake Institute and their partners have experimentally released paddlefish fit with radio transmitting tags on the Texas side of Caddo Lake and facilitated three separate releases on the Louisiana side of Caddo Lake, (not fitted with transmitters). The survival rates lead us toward a full re-stocking of this once native fish on both sides of the lake!
